I bought and fitted original VW EGR part#03L131512DQ for girlfriend's Golf TDI (CAYC) for around £200 including all gaskets/fittings from eBay. Don't think it's been superseded yet. EGR is on back of engine so not a great job without a lift but doable.

My 9-year old Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI had a slightly rough idle, slightly underwhelming performance and - most importantly - a warning light for glow plugs (flashing).
The EGR is operated by vacuum created by the vacuum pump. As the engine speeds up, more vacuum is generated and the EGR closes. Likely, your mechanic manually applied vacuum to the EGR and checked to see if it would close. Your problem may be that the valve has worn out and cannot close, as this is a fairly common.

Å koda Octavia. Skoda Octavia Mk II (2004 - 2013) EGR nightmare !!! Hello, here's my nightmare story: The car in question is an Octavia 1.6 FSI mk2, 2005, and I had a faulty EGR valve for some time, so I decided it's time to change it (turned up a broken plastic gear inside the EGR valve after opening it, which didn't let the valve to open).
